Chemical Name: escitalopram oxalate Manufacturer: Forest Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
Therapeutic dose : 15mg (based on what we've heard from patients). NO GENERIC TILL 2012
Consumer Review:
Lexapro is the boneless version of Celexa. Celexa was (and still is, in generic form) a popular anti-depressant, grossing almost $1 billion in sales in 2001 for Forest Labs. They cleverly introduced Lexapro in 2002, since Celexa patent was set to expire in early 2004. The story was "Lexapro is better, more potent than Celexa, it includes only the active isomer in Celexa". Patients who switched from Celexa to Lexapro have not found a significant difference in efficacy or side-effect profile. One website suggests that if cost is an issue, generic Celexa may be worth trying, before opting for Lexapro.
Nausea and headache are the most commonly reported side-effect of Celexa as well as Lexapro. Click for additional info.
Lexapro is FDA Approved as an Anti-Depressant ( Depression ), and as an Anti-Anxiety ( General Anxiety Disorder GAD ) medication.

The side-effects listed for many of the medications are so numerous, you would think no one would want to take them. I know I didn't, at first. But when you the clinical trial results for such medications, certain side-effects are so rare, like 2 of 1,000 patients reported those, you can assess the risk much better. Did those two get diarrhea only because of the medication? Doesn't matter. For legal purposes, every side-effect is noted and reported. That's why it helps to read the forum topics on what others have experienced with specific medications. ( More about deciding on medications based only on side-effects you read )
